Matrix Design Group is proud to announce that Zakary Payne, P.E., Chief Operating Officer, has been named a Fellow in the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Academy of Fellows (AOF). This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the field of military engineering and the architecture/engineering/construction (A/E/C) profession. 

Zakary is one of only 22 SAME members selected for this distinction in 2025. He was formally inducted during the Academy’s 30th Anniversary ceremony, held on May 15, 2025, in Louisville, KY.

The SAME Academy of Fellows recognizes individuals who not only demonstrate excellence in their professions but also mentor others and serve as thought leaders within the industry. Fellows inspire and guide the next generation of engineers while advancing innovation across military and civilian infrastructure sectors. 

Zakary’s elevation to Fellow reflects his deep commitment to excellence, leadership, and service. This honor marks a significant milestone in his career and underscores the impact he continues to make in both public and private engineering sectors. With his induction, Zakary now joins fellow Matrix leaders Sal Nodjomian, CEO, and Charlie Perham, Director of Advanced Solutions, as a member of the AOF.

Since joining Matrix in 2018, Zakary has been instrumental in driving the firm’s growth and operational success. Appointed COO in 2024, he now leads strategic initiatives that shape the company’s future and strengthen its operational performance. Previously, as Vice President and Co-Director of Government Consulting Services (GCS), Zakary helped transform GCS into one of Matrix’s most successful divisions.

With over 20 years of experience in design and construction—and 15 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Air Force—Zakary offers deep expertise in public works, capital improvement planning, asset management, and infrastructure investment. His military background continues to shape his strategic leadership across the engineering and construction industries.
