Designing for accessibility starts long before a project is built—it begins with a mindset.
Last week, Steven Mifsud, MBE, Director of Accessibility at Direct Access, a Division of Matrix Design Group, joined the team at Davis Partnership Architects for a Lunch & Learn focused on rethinking accessibility in the design process.
The conversation challenged the idea that ADA compliance is the end goal, emphasizing that compliance is the floor—not the ceiling. Instead, the discussion explored how universal design principles can help create more inclusive, adaptable, and human-centered spaces that work for everyone.
Drawing from a disability-led perspective and expertise across physical, sensory, social, digital, and governance accessibility, Direct Access partners with architects, designers, and owners to embed accessibility from the earliest stages of design—transforming it from a final compliance check into a core design strategy.
The session sparked thoughtful conversations around best practices, international accessibility perspectives, and how inclusive design enhances creativity rather than limiting it.
