Matrix Design Group, Inc. is helping advance the science behind one of the nation’s most iconic landscapes. At the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, we’re supporting a research project to better understand how the American bison, our national mammal, influences habitat resilience and post-fire recovery.
Following the 2025 Dragon Bravo wildfire, bison quickly returned to portions of the burned landscape, creating a unique opportunity to study how grazing influences vegetation recovery. Using field monitoring and drone-based multispectral imagery, the team is evaluating how bison grazing affects meadows, forests, habitat condition, and long-term ecosystem resilience.
By better understanding how bison herds influence the landscape, this research will help improve knowledge of how bison grazing influences post-fire vegetation recovery and ecosystem resilience.
