Enchanted/Fascination Circle Bridge & Culvert Replacement

Enchanted Circle and Fascination Circle are older residential streets in the City of Colorado Springs that were compromised due to failing drainage mechanisms. Manhole structures had been placed horizontally below the roadbeds instead of traditional culverts that allow for proper hydraulic flow, leading to flooding and structural damage. Matrix prepared design and construction documents for the City to replace the system with functional box culverts and with the flexibility to use either prefabricated or cast-in-place culverts that vary in dimension. Contractor preference for cast-in-place ultimately required additional coordination during the construction phase to ensure fit. Our roadway, structural, and water resources engineers analyzed the area hydrology to determine flows through each culvert and then used an HEC-RAS model to determine the reinforced concrete box culvert size needed for each. A full set of construction documents was prepared, including a roadway plan and profile; utility relocations; culvert plan, profile, and details; and channel modifications to fit the new culverts. The project was successfully bid, constructed, and completed on time and under budget and has improved mobility for many residents in the eastern part of the city.
