Matrix team members spent this past Friday volunteering with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Metro Denver to help provide three local families with a new place to call “home”. The team painted the exterior and applied the finishing touches to the interior of a triplex unit at the 17.5-acre Aria Homes development. This multigenerational, mixed-income community will offer diverse housing options and a community garden, which residents will harvest together.
Matrix volunteers have worked with HFH in the past, though volunteer efforts were put on hold last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Angus Campbell, one of our structural project engineers, coordinated this year’s effort to support the important work being done in the Denver area. In 2019, HFH launched a five-year campaign to mobilize local Habitat organizations, partners, volunteers, and community members across the country. Through their Cost of Home campaign, they are finding solutions and helping to create policies that will allow ten million individuals to have access to stable, affordable homes.
“One of my favorite parts of HFH is the fact that they are not giving away homes, but rather they are providing affordable housing for people who just need a little extra help to become a homeowner. A big part of the home buying process is that the future homeowners have to put in “sweat equity” before they can own a home, which often means that you are working alongside the owner-to-be of the home you are constructing.”
