Matrix Design Group was invited to assist a multiple-agency task force, in the long-range planning vision for the 20-mile, US Highway 36 mountain corridor, between Lyons and Estes Park, Colorado, following the devastating floods of September 2013. While Emergency repairs were under construction to stabilize mountain river corridors and re-open the highway, Matrix identified and graphically illustrated potential multiple-use recreation opportunities that could be integrated in the design of Permanent repairs and longer-range, Future recreational planning. Task force concepts included methods to restore rivers and stabilize the highway using ecologically sustainable practices, while improving vehicular and cycling safety, river access opportunities, multi-use pedestrian trail segments, enhanced trailhead facilities and potential floodplain park areas.
