The Lafayette Waterwise Landscape Ordinance is a water-conserving landscape strategy for the State Department of Local Affairs to be offered to Colorado communities as a model municipal ordinance. Two municipalities served as client demonstration sites to guide ordinance development and test the ordinance through adoption. Drawing from current western water conservation techniques, xeriscape principles and landscape best management practices, the team developed a model ordinance that provides owners with design and management flexibility within a mandatory water budget for regulated landscapes. Additionally, a user-friendly Best Practices Workbook was prepared for non-regulated landscapes that included a comprehensive plant list, native seed mixtures, irrigation and soil amendment information. Design Studios West, a Matrix company, led the team of landscape architects and water conservation specialists.
