Matrix Design Group, Inc. (Matrix) was the prime design engineer for replacement of the Evans Avenue Bridge in Colorado Springs at the mouth of Cheyenne Canyon. The existing bridge had weight limits placed on it due to structural deficiencies. Matrix developed several alternatives and went through a robust community outreach process to arrive at a design that provided the same aesthetics as the existing structure, but provided for a wider roadway and would not require weight limits to be placed. Because the bridge is in the City’s Cheyenne Canyon Park, the project had to obtain environmental clearance through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The finished bridge is composed of pre-stressed slabs which provided the maximum hydraulic section for Cheyenne Creek to pass through and also provided opportunity to use existing materials from the creek bed and existing structure as the façade for the new bridge.
